How to Get Your Book On the Shelves

If you've got a book idea rattling around in your head, it will likely stay there unless you understand how to put together a compelling proposal to convince publishers to bring it to market. Here are the basic elements of a solid book proposal:

1. The Overview. This is where you give a general idea of what your book is about and why it's 'hook' is unique from others on the same topic. Discuss the worldly environment that it will be born into and why the time is now for it to come forth. What's more, why are you the person to do so? If you have a book idea about dog obedience, for example, and have personally tamed three crazy shelter dogs, make your case!

2. The Table of Contents and Chapter Outline. Often the most difficult part of the entire process, putting together the table of contents proves to yourself (and ultimately, publishers) that you have enough 'meat' to flesh out your topic. Can you cover ten different chapters? Are the headlines for each chapter engaging? Do they give the reader a good idea of what their reading experience will be like? Once you are happy with your chapters and titles, write a lead paragraph for each. This will be your only chance to demonstrate your writing style or 'voice' until the actual writing is done.

3. The Introduction. What, exactly, is the purpose of a book's Introduction anyway? Check a few non-fiction titles out at the library and get a feel for them. You'll see that there's no hard and fast rules, but generally the Introduction is the author's chance to explain what he or she is about to tell you. Or maybe it's his/her chance to explain why they wrote the book in the first place.

4. Target Markets. No more talking to readers here, this is where you tell publishers that you completely understand the demographics of the audience you intend to sell to. Who are these people? How old are they and how do they spend their free time? If you're writing a book about parenting, for example, give statistics about how busy your readers are and how eager they have proven to be when it comes to seeking advice.

5. Competitive Titles. There are undoubtedly already several published titles on a similar subject to yours. Find them and write a paragraph or two about them. Then, explain how your book's 'hook' offers something completely different to the shared audience.

6. Author Background. By this point in your proposal, you've done a great job of selling your concept, but why are you the person to write the book? Do you have a built-in audience? Generally publishers consider a first-time book by a non-published author a success if they sell 10,000 copies. If you have a large family, but your connections stop there, you might have a tough go of it. However, if you are writing a book for young women and were the president of your college sorority, that's a built-in audience with an alumni magazine that might publish an excerpt. Do you have endorsements (direct quotes) from readers of your work in another format? Can you offer a unique perspective of the subject? This is where you position yourself as the only author who can bring this book to market and why.

7. Promotions. Gone are the glory days when authors were sent on posh book tours and the marketing was done by a department. Unless you're already a best seller, that is! You need to think outside of the box and help your publisher spread the word about your book. This is the section where you share your brainstorming ideas for book promotion. Would you print the title on #2 pencils and offer them to students on test days? Would you offer parents a forum on a web site to ask questions about parenting? Think outside of the box here and convince publishers that they would have a marketing partner in you.

9 Lessons For Those In The Real Estate Business

When I was in a mastermind meeting with real estate entrepreneurs not long ago, I asked the question:

What lessons have you learned from the real estate market bubble-burst and this recession?

I was stunned to learn that many real estate agents haven't taken any lessons from this mess. I, myself, have learned many. In fact, I am keeping a little notebook in which I record the new lessons I am taught -- which is almost daily. I am hoping to keep this little notebook handy for the next recession we go through, whenever that time comes around.

I thought I'd share with you some business lessons I have learned.

1. Credit lines WILL disappear. This includes business and personal credit lines. My lender froze my home equity loan. I'm sure your lender did too. The BIG lesson here is to build large cash reserves. Don't think that your credit lines will be available when you need them. They won't. Or borrow from your credit lines early and put the money in a savings account and make the interest payments.

2. Obtaining new credit will be tough. Your credit score doesn't matter much when nobody is lending money. See above.

3. Business opportunities change quickly. You must be proactive and spotting and adapting to these changes. What are larger businesses doing to adapt? Copy their strategies within your business.Where is the money in your marketplace. Pay attention. Follow the money. Be decisive. Change quickly.

4. Clients have been and will be jittery about buying and selling. Comprehend this shift in their thinking. Adapt your communication with clients accordingly.

5. Keep your business's overhead as low as possible. It can take you down very quickly. Don't move into that large office space just because it seems like a bargain. Don't take on too many new employees right now. And certainly don't take on large fixed expenses. Keep your expenses variable; that way, you can reduce them quickly if you must.

6. Improve your customer service RIGHT NOW. When the market was peaking, we let our customer service slip because it didn't matter too much. This was a big mistake, and now we must go above and beyond for our customers. We cannot give them any excuse or reason to take their business somewhere else.

7. Seek ways to offer lower-priced goods or services. When money is tight, price becomes a bigger consideration to your clients. Be prepared to adjust your pricing so that they have no reason to go elsewhere.

8. You have to have multiple income streams in place. When times are good, prepare for leaner times by creating multiple income streams. Diversify, so that losing one source of income doesn't mean disaster. Multiple sources of income are like life rafts on a big ship; they can save you from drowning.

9. Cash gives you the power to lock in massive wealth. You've heard the saying - "Cash is King", right? It's true. Had you built a huge amount of cash while times were good, couldn't you be investing in great opportunities now that times are bad? Homes are being purchased for pennies on the dollar. Stocks are at rock-bottom prices. Buy when others are selling, and sell when others are buying.

I hope this will help you eliminate mis-steps in your business. This recession will likely continue to deliver important business lessons you. You will learn them, one way or the other, one time or another. Let's learn them the first time around!

Advantages of Mechanical Trading Systems

Currency traders use different approaches in their trading. Majority of successful traders use self developed mechanical trading systems. There are always advantages and disadvantages of different trading systems. The majority of unsuccessful traders depend on discrete trading method.

Many traders use their own developed trading systems. There are many actively developed trading systems for sale as computer programs also known as Expert Advisors or Robots. Theses robots vary widely in prices. It can be from a few hundred dollars to a few hundred thousand dollars.

The significant advantage of these computer programs is that they generate signals. These signals can be used by the trader for trading. Sometimes these computer programs are developed for a certain bank or a corporation.

The discrete trading method is used by many traders. It is like an artist trying to adapt to different market conditions using flexibility and tactics corresponding to the particular market condition.

In case of a discrete trading method, the traders mood and health can greatly affect the outcome of each trade. The main disadvantage of the discrete trading approach is due to the stress factor influencing the trader, the unstable trade results.

A mechanical trading system prevents the trader from quick adjustment of trade tactics and strategies under changing market conditions. However, it almost completely removes the influences of the stress factor. It also reduces the negative pressure on a trader which is obviously a big plus.

A mechanical trading system also doesnt allow the quick customization of the trading system in cases like the change of the account size. There are eight requirements that any ideal trading systems should fulfill. These conditions are:

1. A trading system should allow for the maximum adjustment to any traders psychological character and makeup.

2. It should be universal and does not depend on a particular market condition at any moment of time.

3. It should be simple, logical and depend on understandable ready to use elements and units.

4. The trading system should provide specific price signals for the trader for entry and exit positions some time in advance.

5. The trading system must allow some room for the traders creativity.

6. There should be some flexibility to modernize and adjust the trading system in accordance with the changing market conditions without violating its main principles and elements of the trading system.

7. The trading system should relieve the trader from emotional and psychological stress in trading.

8. It should be customizable. Different traders can use the same method with different account sizes and different risk/reward appetites.

A previously effective trade system could lead to negative results from change of market conditions. No one trading system can fulfill all these requirements.

Trade systems based on these requirements could be complex and adjustable. The only way of satisfying these conditions is through developing a diversified trading system. It can consist of a set of systems. These systems can be used as the basis for specific trade tactics at any given moment.
